Exercise 2: Story 3

Matrem

An inch away from the end of his life, an old man recalls his regret of being a man without love for a mother.

Today is the last day of my life.

I can feel my last breath drawing near.

As I look through the bars of my ward’s window, I can feel the wind carry all my memories of this one hell of a ride.

. . .

It was a blue afternoon.

I was lying face down on the sand; being a sea turtle.

The pleasant breeze of the nonchalant, ever-rolling waves clasped my small body.

The bright sunlight bathed me.

I was enjoying the heat, until a shadow approached me.

A shadow of my mother.

She hugged my body tightly while saying this, “It’s just the two of us now, honey.”

And then she burst into tears.

. . .

Ah, what a painful past indeed.

How can it not be?

I’ve only had 7 years to spend with my father.

His face was literally clouded from me.

. . .

“Stop bugging me, Mom!”, I said as I scurried away to my room upstairs, slamming the door which bears a lot of signs of eviction to anyone whom desires to enter my private sanctuary.

Yes, my mother was included.

I was being so young, and foolish.

Growing up without a father to look up to.

As a guy, I don’t like to be asked frequently about my day.

My days were all bad.

My looks were also bad.

I might look fierce, with all this studs on my clothes and pierced metals on my body, but it’s actually just a statement to tell everyone not to mess up with me.

I don’t have anyone to stand up for me.

I can’t afford to lose.

I was just scared of everything.

And I was ashamed of it.

I don’t like to share all this to you, Mom.

I’m a disgrace.

It’s better for you to stay away, I want to look tough under this puny façade.

I’m sorry that you have to cry again, but I’m helpless.

I need a man to teach me to be a man.

. . .

I looked at the clock once more.

How many minutes do I have left?

. . .

My adulthood was a mess.

The shame I felt growing up, became something too familiar to let go.

And it includes you, Mom.

I always shove my shoulders standoffishly when you tried to console me.

I lied to you so much and I deafened myself so that I am impervious to your advices, and tears.

I felt so content with myself until that day, when there’s only one left of the two of us.

The day when I realized that I was the worst man ever lived.

And this is true.

I lived the last years of my life in remorse and misery.

I am nothing without you..

. . .

Time is running out.

I am scared, yes I do.

But I’m also delighted.

In any moment, I will detach myself from this shriveled, wrinkled shell of what used to be a man.

I close my eyes.

I know I will see you again, Mom.

And you won’t be the one crying this time.

Character Design - Week 2 Posted

An antagonist character design from my notebook.

Exercise 2: Story 1

The Girl Next Door

"A confused romantic adolescent, in the dark within his mind - trying to figure out the truth of a painful 'dream' ."

It was a very boring Sunday morning in the breezy Malibu neighborhood. The clock shows that it’s still 9 in the morning.  Annoyed by the fact that he woke up super early – at least for him – that day, Jake tried to fall back into sleep, but he couldn’t. After some minutes of this bizarre morning insomnia, he decided to look out through his white wood-paned window.
The warming rays of morning sun bathed the whole neighborhood, accompanied with the sound of running waves and the breeze of the sea. “What a wonderful day.”, Jake said to himself. He stared blankly into the scenery until he heard a sound of what seems to be a revving truck engine. This immediately snapped him into his senses and as he turned to see who’s car that was, he found himself looking down on a moving truck, with a beautiful damsel coming out of it. What a wonderful day indeed!
With shocking awe, Jake rushed to find his cleanest T-shirt and shorts, hastily running downstairs and out to ‘help’ his neighbor move in. Her name was Abigail, and she has the most charming smile in the world. Her hourglass body was framed with long golden locks of hair, and this was more than enough to make the stunned Jake to fall in love with her.
Day by day, Jake and Abigail grew even more attracted to each other, and Jake confessed his love at last. They became avid lovers. For them, only love matters, nothing else does.
After some months together, Jake started to feel that Abigail was being scarily weird. She doesn’t like to see anyone near him, even the boys that he used to play with. His friends started to go away from him, as if someone had blackmailed him. Frustrated with the fact that he’s got no one besides his horrible girlfriend, he tried to reason with Abigail.
That night was decorated with the dripping sound of water going down to earth. The two lovers were tightly embracing each other. Jake was afraid to bring up that appalling subject, but he brought that anyway. Annoyed by the promptness of Jake’s accusation that she’s blackmailing his friends, Abigail became furious.
The next thing Jake knows, he saw his girlfriend crying furiously - her black mascara tainted her tanned cheeks – and he saw a glistening silver object coming out from her hands. “If I can’t have you for myself, no one can, and now.. no one will!”. Jake felt massive stabs all over his body. The impact on his body is too much, he can feel his consciousness drifting away, vanishing into oblivion.
Jake found himself waking up on his room, feeling fine. He didn’t remember a single thing about last night. After a while, everything flashed so fast in the back of his mind. He scanned the room and found blood. Suddenly he felt a severe pain in his head, and in the bottom of his heart. The blood was not his.

The important thing to remember is that a good pitch is a description of what actually happens. It's a one sentence description of the plot, not the theme.

Uneven beats are the most forgettable or sometimes tedious parts of a film. Erratic beats jolt the audience unnecessarily. Every cinematic genre has a beat that is specific to its development. Action film has significantly more beats (usually events); drama has fewer beats (usually protagonist decisions or discovery). Between each beat a sequence occurs. This sequence is often a series of scenes that relates to the last beat and leads up to the next beat.

A literary term defined as the events that make up a story, particularly as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, or by coincidence.
