Exercise 2: Story 4

The Snobby Fox

A fox realizes that beauty and fame might end up in awry.

Foxes are one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. They have pretty eyes and snow-white fur, very agile, and they can easily jump from an adequate height and land safely on their feet. This story is about one of them.
This fox lives in the Arctic, and he is the most handsome on the land. He likes to take a stroll every morning and show his beauty to everyone, who was always enchanted by him.
He was doing his morning stroll one day, when he realized that no one was on sight. He searched here and there, but they are nowhere to be found. Suddenly, he heard chatters from somewhere to the north of his bearings. The fox was very curious and he decided to go north.
When he reached the place, he can see a lot of animals are gathering into a big circle. He asked a beaver nearby, “What’s happening, beaver?”. Beaver said, “There’s a new fellow in town, mate! He’s so adorable we can’t help but to stare at him all day long!” Appalled, the fox rushes into the crowd, hoping to take a peek of this mysterious newcomer. Ah! It is indeed an adorable chinchilla.
The fox’ pride is hurt by this little creature. Alas, he decided to do something to hurt chinchilla’s fame and regain his.
One day, the fox comes into chinchilla’s den. “Come out, come out, wherever you are!”, said the fox. Slowly, the little chinchilla comes out, saying, “Good morning, Mr. Fox. How may I help you?”. “Young fellow, I can see that you have caused quite of a fuss around here. Everyone is talking about only good things about you. I’m very curious about what you can do, therefore I’m challenging you into a competition.” This scene caused everyone nearby to notice and began to chant, “Accept it! Accept it!”. Startled, chinchilla was forced to accept his challenge.
They were supposed to jump down from the lowest branch of a pine tree and land safely on four legs. It’s a simple task any fox can do, but chinchillas? They don’t stand a chance.
Arrogantly, the fox decides to go first, hoping to drop the chinchilla’s morale. “I’ll show you who’s best!” One.. Two.. Three.. Down came the fox, landed safely on the ground.. when he realized that.. crash! He fell down into a trap under the snow!
“Help! Help me!”, he asks, but no one was helping him. “Boring! What show is this?” Saying that, all the animals went back to their own homes. Disappointed, the fox can only cry down the hole for an hour when suddenly, something touched the tip of his nose.
“Here, Mr. Fox! Let us pull you out!” It was the chinchilla! He made a grass rope and tied it to a big rock so that the fox can pull himself out.
After a lot of effort, the fox is finally resurfaced. He was ashamed about how arrogant he was. He realized that he was alone although people knew who he is. “I’m sorry. Thank you for saving me..” cried the fox. The chinchilla comforted him and said, “There’s nothing to be sorry for, Mr. Fox. It’s not a bad thing for someone to help his friend.” Arrogant people fail in the end, and the humble will prevail.
